14-Year-Old Tyronai Reed Fatally Shot in Hammond; 18-Year-Old Charged

Tragedy struck the Hammond community late Tuesday night when 14-year-old Tyronai Reed was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. on February 24, 2026, prompting an immediate response from the Hammond Police Department.

Officers arrived at the scene after reports of gunfire and discovered Reed suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel provided life-saving treatment on-site before transporting her to North Oaks Health System. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Reed later succumbed to her injuries.

The Hammond Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation through its Criminal Investigations Division. Authorities identified 18-year-old Demontez Treyvon “Trey” Robinson of Hammond as a suspect in the shooting. While actively investigating, officers observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and conducted a traffic stop. Robinson was found to be the driver and was taken into custody without incident.

During questioning, investigators reported that Robinson admitted the firearm discharged while he was handling or “playing with” it, striking Reed with a single round. Following this admission, Robinson was booked into the Hammond City Jail on a charge of negligent homicide.
