Dramatic turn of events for the 2024 presidential race, former President Donald Trump has surged ahead in the polls following a widely criticized debate performance by President Joe Biden. According to a recent report from Fox News on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, a national survey conducted by the New York Times and Siena College reveals Trump leading Biden 49% to 43% among likely voters nationwide. This marks a notable three-point swing in Trump’s favor compared to just a week ago.

The debate, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia, showcased Biden’s hesitant delivery and stumbling responses, prompting significant concern within the Democratic Party. Political analysts, editorial writers, and even some party donors have called for Biden to reconsider his candidacy amidst growing doubts about his ability to secure re-election.

Despite mounting pressure, Biden’s campaign has remained steadfast in their stance that he will continue in the race. In response to the fallout from the debate, Biden is scheduled to meet with Democratic governors and congressional leaders to address the situation later today.

The latest polls also highlight increasing concerns among voters regarding Biden’s age, with 81-year-old Biden being the oldest president in U.S. history. Nearly three-quarters of respondents now believe Biden is too old for the job, a sentiment that has grown more pronounced following the debate. Among Democrats, concerns about Biden’s age have risen by eight points to 59%, while nearly 80% of independents share similar reservations.

In addition to the New York Times/Siena College poll, a Wall Street Journal survey released shortly thereafter shows Trump leading Biden by six points among registered voters, with 48% supporting Trump compared to 42% for Biden. This shift underscores the perception that Biden’s debate performance has negatively impacted his re-election prospects.

While Biden has managed to narrow the gap among independent voters, his support among Democrats has weakened, and Trump has seen an uptick in support among Republicans. Despite these challenges, the percentage of Democrats advocating for a change in the party’s nominee remains below critical levels, suggesting a divided sentiment within the party.

In an effort to reassure supporters, the Biden campaign has released an internal memo citing close internal polling figures and urging caution in interpreting recent external polls. Campaign officials emphasized that polls are snapshots in time and expect fluctuations in the coming weeks.

As the campaign progresses, the focus will be on how Biden can recover from this setback and regain momentum heading into the election. Trump’s resurgence in the polls underscores the competitive nature of the race, highlighting the challenges both candidates face as they vie for the presidency in 2024.
