Tragic case of mistaken identity, a teenager’s attempt to retrieve a stolen iPhone led to the deaths of five innocent family members in Colorado. Kevin Bui, now 20, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for setting a fire that resulted in this devastating loss of life.
The Tragic Incident
On a fateful night in 2020, Djibril “Jibby” Diol, his wife Adja, their young daughter Khadija, Diol’s sister Hassan, and her infant daughter Hawa Beye were all killed in a house fire. This horrific event occurred when Bui, along with accomplices Gavin Seymour and Dillon Siebert, set fire to the Diol family home in Green Valley Ranch, Denver. Bui, seeking revenge for a stolen iPhone, mistakenly targeted the Diol family home using the “Find My iPhone” app.
A Terrible Mistake
Bui and his accomplices, 16-year-old Gavin Seymour and 14-year-old Dillon Siebert, believed the stolen phone was inside the Diol residence. They planned their attack meticulously over several weeks, purchasing hockey masks and gasoline containers. On the night of the tragedy, they broke into the home, doused it with gasoline, and set it ablaze. The fire rapidly consumed the house, trapping the family inside. While three individuals managed to escape by jumping from a second-floor window, five family members perished in the fire.
Investigation and Arrest
The authorities used cell phone location data and surveillance footage to identify and locate the suspects. Surveillance cameras captured the trio purchasing the masks used in the crime, and a neighbor’s doorbell camera recorded their presence at the scene. In January 2021, police arrested Bui, Seymour, and Siebert, charging them with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder and arson.
Legal Proceedings
During the trial, Bui’s legal team negotiated a plea deal with the Denver District Attorney’s Office. In exchange for pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder, prosecutors agreed to drop an additional 60 criminal charges. This plea deal resulted in Bui receiving a 60-year sentence in a state correctional facility.
Bui’s accomplices also faced significant legal repercussions. Seymour, who was 16 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder earlier this year and received a 40-year prison sentence. Siebert, who was 14 during the incident, was sentenced to three years in a juvenile detention center followed by seven years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
Sentencing and Aftermath
During the sentencing hearing, Bui was notably reserved, offering brief responses to Judge Karen Brody’s questions. None of the victims’ family members attended the hearing in person; they chose to watch the proceedings via livestream instead.
This tragic event underscores the devastating consequences of misguided actions and mistaken identity. The innocent lives lost and the subsequent legal outcomes serve as a sobering reminder of the far-reaching impact of such crimes.
