As reported by Newsweek on December 11, 2023, the film, depicting two families navigating a nationwide blackout and a world in turmoil, has come under scrutiny for a specific scene featuring a Black couple in bed with a line cautioning against easily trusting anyone, especially white people, if the world falls apart.

Released on Netflix last Friday, the movie has sparked significant social media response, particularly on platforms like X, where users criticize the scene for allegedly demonizing white individuals.

Produced under the banner of Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, the film has been accused by critics of perpetuating racial bias and contributing to a divisive narrative.

Newsweek sought a comment from Barack Obama, but as of now, there has been no response from the former president.

Director Sam Esmail, who consulted Obama during the scriptwriting process to ground the story in realism, stated that Obama’s feedback aimed to infuse empathy into the narrative, reflecting his perspective as a fan of the source material.

While criticism of the film has been vocal, there are defenders who appreciate the broader discussion points raised by “Leave the World Behind.”

The controversy has sparked discussions on social media, with users expressing contrasting views on the film’s depiction of race, trust, and societal dynamics during a fictional crisis.

Former President Barack Obama, who has mostly remained out of the public eye since leaving office, faces a situation highlighting the ongoing sensitivity and tension surrounding depictions of race and social issues in media and entertainment.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how this controversy might impact the public reception of the film and the broader initiatives of the Obamas in the entertainment industry.
