In a recent interview with ABC News, United States Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco addressed the escalating threats against the Justice Department, attributing the surge to what she termed “unfounded” claims by Republicans regarding the department’s alleged political bias against former President Donald Trump.

Monaco, who oversees all cases related to the January 6 events, expressed her deep concern over the consequences of these accusations on the reputation of the Justice Department and the safety of its personnel.

The Deputy Attorney General forcefully refuted allegations that the Justice Department has become a political tool, asserting, “Those accusations bear no resemblance to the Justice Department that I know.” Monaco highlighted the commitment of the department’s professionals, emphasizing that their duties are carried out impartially, irrespective of political affiliations.

Expressing dismay at the claims, Monaco argued that they not only distort the reality of the Justice Department but also contribute to a toxic environment, doing a disservice to the dedicated individuals working within the department.

She underscored the alarming consequence of these accusations – a notable increase in threats against public officials, including law enforcement agents, prosecutors, judges, and election officials.

Monaco revealed that the Justice Department is actively addressing these threats, with U.S. attorneys nationwide providing frequent “urgent reports” on such incidents. Notably, these threats extend to Justice Department employees, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of those tasked with upholding justice.

The report contextualizes Monaco’s statements within a broader narrative, highlighting that she is part of a group of federal prosecutors facing attacks from Donald Trump and his allies. As Trump faces multiple criminal prosecutions in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, he has targeted Monaco, special counsel Jack Smith, and other DOJ prosecutors and federal judges involved in cases against him.

The former president’s disparaging comments have extended beyond Monaco, encompassing warnings and insults directed at various officials. In November, Trump singled out Jack Smith and other DOJ officials, suggesting they could end up in a mental institution if he is re-elected. He labeled them a “team of losers and misfits” from CREW, an ethics watchdog group, while also attacking others perceived as part of a “Radical Left Zealots and Thugs” working against him.
