Former GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger has ignited a fresh wave of controversy by openly questioning Donald Trump’s Christian beliefs in response to the former president’s unconventional Christmas message, posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Former President Donald Trump’s Christmas messages, as reported by The Fresno Bee on Tuesday, December 26, took an unexpected and combative turn. Trump’s posts drew criticism for deviating from the traditional holiday tone and instead focusing on political attacks against President Joe Biden and Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Accusing Smith of leading a “WITCH HUNT” against him, Trump lashed out at political foes both domestic and international. The posts, peppered with grievances about issues ranging from inflation to international affairs, concluded with a controversial wish: “MAY THEY ROT IN HELL. AGAIN, MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger took to social media to challenge Trump’s Christian identity. In a strongly-worded post, Kinzinger expressed doubt about Trump’s faith, asserting, “this man is not a Christian. If you are a Christian who supports him, you don’t understand your own religion.”

Kinzinger continued, describing Trump as “weak, meager, smelly, victim-ey, belly-achey, but he ain’t a Christian and he’s not ‘God’s man.'”

This exchange highlights the intersection of political and religious discourse, with Trump, a figure with a significant following among evangelical Christians, facing criticism for the divergence between his actions and Christian principles.

Grant Davis Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, provided insight into the unusual nature of Trump’s Christmas messages, suggesting that the departure from typical holiday positivity might be an attempt to reverse unfavorable trends, possibly indicated by internal polling.

Kinzinger’s challenge adds another layer to the ongoing debate within the Republican Party about its direction and values. The former congressman, who served until 2023, has been a vocal critic of Trump and his influence on the party, particularly evident in his decision not to seek re-election in 2022.

Among the 10 House Republicans who voted for Trump’s impeachment after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Kinzinger has consistently positioned himself as a more independent and critical voice within the GOP.

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, former federal prosecutor Joyce White Vance, and Texas State Representative, among others, joined Kinzinger in critiquing Trump’s Christmas posts. Reich likened it to a family member’s concerning rant, while Vance commented on Trump’s “ALL CAPS meltdown” on Truth Social. The criticism emphasizes the contradiction with the gospel message of Christmas, emphasizing Christian values of love and forgiveness.
