New York civil fraud trial, Donald Trump made his way to the closing arguments on Thursday amid heightened security following a bomb threat at the residence of Judge Arthur Engoron, who recently barred the former president from delivering his closing statements. Despite the threat, proceedings were not delayed.

The bomb threat unfolded at Judge Engoron’s Long Island home early Thursday morning, hours before the final day of the trial. This incident followed a pattern of false reports targeting public officials’ homes, including a fake emergency call about a shooting at the judge overseeing Trump’s Capitol attack criminal case in Washington, D.C.

Trump, a prominent contender for the Republican presidential nomination, has consistently criticized Judge Engoron, alleging close collaboration with the New York attorney general to undermine him. On entering the courtroom, Trump voiced his frustration, characterizing the judge’s decision as “political interference” preventing him from presenting his closing remarks.

Despite Trump’s desire to address the court personally, his lawyer refrained from raising the issue before launching into his own closing argument. Engoron had rejected an unconventional plan for Trump to deliver personal closing remarks, insisting that he adhere to “relevant” matters.

The trial, spanning 44 days, revolves around allegations that Trump inflated his wealth on financial statements provided to banks and insurance companies. New York Attorney General Letitia James seeks $370 million in penalties, while Trump contends he did nothing wrong, asserting that outside accountants should have flagged any discrepancies.

Trump’s legal team argued that the case is a manufactured claim with no evidence, emphasizing the absence of fraud testimony during the trial. The former president had hoped to use his closing remarks to personally argue his case, but the judge, citing missed deadlines and ground rules violations, denied this opportunity.

Despite the death of his mother-in-law and the onset of the presidential primary season, Trump attended the trial as a spectator. The proceedings mark a pivotal moment in a series of legal challenges faced by Trump, including a recent court appearance in Washington, D.C., regarding charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election.

Judge Engoron, who aims to deliver a decision by the end of the month, had previously signaled a leaning towards finding Trump and his co-defendants liable on some claims, emphasizing the importance of truth in financial statements.
