Madonna, the iconic Queen of Pop, is currently entangled in a legal dispute with two fans who attended her Celebration Tour concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, according to a report by People on Friday, January 19, 2024.
The lawsuit, filed in New York on Thursday, alleges “false advertising” as the concert reportedly commenced over two hours behind schedule.
As per court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the plaintiffs contend that the concert scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on December 13, as indicated on the tickets, did not begin until 10:30 p.m. The delay, they claim, persisted in subsequent Brooklyn concerts on December 14 and 16. The fans argue that the tardiness constitutes a “wanton exercise in false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices.”
Madonna, The Celebration Tour promoter Live Nation, and the venue Barclays Center are all targets of the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs assert that had they been aware of the actual start time, they and other ticketholders would not have purchased tickets, considering the impact on their work and family obligations. They also highlight the challenges faced by concertgoers, including limited transportation options and increased costs at such a late hour.
Seeking unspecified damages, the legal action underscores the frustration of fans who anticipated the concert to commence on time. Madonna’s representative has not provided comments on the lawsuit.
Contrary to reports of a three-hour delay, a source revealed to PEOPLE that the schedule was only pushed back by an hour due to issues during soundcheck.
The insider explained that Madonna encountered challenges during soundcheck, causing the delay, but emphasized that the pop icon worked on resolving the issues until the last moment.
Despite the setbacks, Madonna delivered a successful performance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, marking the beginning of the North American leg of her Celebration Tour.
The retrospective tour, which initiated in October with European dates, has received acclaim for its career-spanning set, stage production, wardrobe, and a rotating roster of special guests.
During the Brooklyn concert, Madonna reportedly dealt with sound issues at times, addressing the crowd about hearing an “echo” in her ear.
Notably, actress Julia Garner joined Madonna on stage, adding to the allure of the tour.
As Madonna’s Celebration Tour continues through the winter and spring, featuring a total of 79 shows, the legal dispute introduces a layer of complexity to the artist’s otherwise celebrated and expansive musical journey.
The outcome of the lawsuit will be closely monitored as fans, promoters, and venues navigate the delicate balance between artist performances and audience expectations.
