Kevin Morris, the Hollywood lawyer and close associate of Hunter Biden, has found himself in the crosshairs of House Republicans who stand accused of misrepresentation following Morris’s testimony. The allegations surfaced immediately after a meeting with investigators, as reported by The Hill on January 19, 2024.
Morris, who recently resolved Biden’s outstanding tax issues, expressed frustration through his attorney, Bryan Sullivan, who accused GOP leaders of selectively leaking details from the testimony. Sullivan addressed the issue in a letter to House Oversight and Accountability Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), condemning the practice of partial leaks and advocating for the release of the full transcript to ensure a faithful representation of the testimony.
The letter, obtained exclusively by The Hill, underscored the crucial role of fairness and transparency in the investigative process. The clash between Morris’s legal team and House Republicans is part of a larger dispute, with Democrats alleging a pattern of misrepresentation in the GOP’s investigation into the Biden family’s business affairs and the ongoing impeachment inquiry.
Hunter Biden’s willingness to participate in a closed-door deposition in February was influenced by concerns about the mischaracterization of committee interviews, a sentiment he expressed when defying a December subpoena in favor of a public hearing.
Accompanying Hunter Biden to an Oversight Committee markup a week before his interview, Morris addressed approximately $5 million in loans extended to cover Biden’s tax obligations. However, conflicting narratives emerged regarding the nature of Morris’s relationship with Hunter Biden.
According to a Democratic source familiar with the interview, Morris clarified that he provided loans without expecting favors or benefits from the White House, the Administration, the Biden family, or the President. The source emphasized that Morris’s relationship with Hunter was not exploited for personal gain.
House Republicans, led by Comer, raised ethical and campaign finance concerns, suggesting that Morris’s loans to Hunter Biden might present issues. Comer questioned whether these loans, amounting to at least $5 million, could potentially be forgiven after the next presidential election, raising concerns about Morris’s access to the Biden White House.
Sullivan, Morris’s attorney, refuted Comer’s claims, highlighting the accuracy of the loans with proper legal terms. Sullivan also countered the assertion that Morris had significant access to the Biden White House, stating that his communications with President Biden were minimal and limited to public events.
In response to Sullivan’s letter, Comer maintained that the accuracy of his statements would be verified upon the release of the full interview transcript. A spokesperson for the Oversight Committee GOP assured that the transcript would be released soon, pending confirmation from the court reporter.
Morris remains one of the last witnesses, primarily former business associates of Hunter Biden, scheduled for interviews by the Oversight and Judiciary committee panels. These investigations seek to conclude inquiries into the Biden family’s finances, potentially setting the stage for impeachment articles against President Biden.
Both President Biden and Hunter Biden have consistently asserted that the president had no financial involvement in his son’s business dealings.
