Former President Donald Trump’s supporters are rallying against a recent New York court ruling that mandates him to pay $354.9 million for allegedly inflating his net worth to lenders, as reported by GB News on Friday, February 16, 2024. Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, decried the decision as “manifest injustice” and a result of a “politically fueled witch hunt.”
The case, presided over by Justice Arthur Engoron without a jury, not only imposed a substantial fine on Trump but also implemented a three-year ban on his role as an officer or director of any New York corporation. Moreover, Trump is prohibited from seeking loans from New York financial institutions during this period, raising concerns about potential repercussions on his real estate empire.
In response to the ruling, voices within Trump’s support base criticized the severity of the penalty. Kimberly Guilfoyle, former San Francisco prosecutor, questioned the motivations behind the decision, suggesting internal corruption within the New York Attorney General’s office and the court. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene denounced the ruling as “outrageous” and called for accountability, asserting that those involved “belong in jail for the abuse of power they are wielding against President Trump and his family.”
Former New York legislator Ben Geller expressed confidence that the ruling would not withstand appeal, labeling it “disgusting” and predicting its dismissal. Trump’s adult sons, Don Jr. and Eric, who were also defendants, were each ordered to pay $4 million.
Criticism extended to the judicial system, with Don Jr. highlighting the influence of political beliefs and venue on case outcomes, stating, “We’ve reached the point where your political beliefs combined with what venue your case is heard are the primary determinants of the outcome; not the facts of the case!” The brothers’ lawyer, Clifford Robert, decried the decision as a “gross injustice.”
Despite vows to appeal, Trump may be required to deposit his portion of the judgment plus interest. Republican Senator for Ohio J.D. Vance condemned the court’s decision, characterizing American courts as “corrupt weapons of the Democratic Party” and expressing confidence in Trump’s eventual victory on appeal, despite significant expenses.
Estimates of Trump’s wealth vary, with Forbes valuing it at $2.6 billion, while Trump claimed around $400 million in cash during a deposition. New York Attorney General Letitia James hailed the ruling as “a massive victory,” declaring that Trump and his associates must pay over $450 million in disgorgement and interest.
