Preacher Jim Wallis issued a stark warning to fellow pastors regarding what he sees as the “takeover” of the Christian church by former President Donald Trump. Wallis, author of the book False White Gospel, expressed deep concern over Trump’s utilization of religion in his speeches and rallies throughout his ongoing presidential campaign.

“I’m very worried about how the faith factor could be this white Christian nationalism which is idolatrous…it means false worship,” Wallis emphasized, condemning Trump’s actions as sacrilegious and blasphemous. He urged a shift in focus away from Trump’s actions towards reclaiming the true essence of faith.

Highlighting the infiltration of right-wing politics into religious spaces, Wallis pointed out, “A lot of pastors would like to find the true story again. Some have been a part of the political takeover…the political takeover of the church.”

White Evangelical Christians, a significant support base for Trump in previous elections, were drawn to him due to his stance on abortion rights and religious freedom. Despite this, recent surveys indicate a slight shift in support towards President Joe Biden among this demographic.

While Trump continues to maintain overall support, Biden’s numbers among white evangelicals have seen a modest increase. Notably, Trump’s attempt to further cement his religious appeal by offering Bibles authored by country music artist Lee Greenwood has faced criticism, with Wallis accusing Trump of idolatry and heresy in a recent column for the Daily Beast.

As the presidential election approaches, support from Christian groups and white evangelicals remains crucial. Despite Trump’s influence, Biden maintains a significant portion of this demographic, signaling a potential challenge to Trump’s hold on religious voters.
