Zendaya’s latest venture into the world of cinema, the captivating tennis drama “Challengers,” has taken the weekend box office by storm, debuting with an impressive $15 million in ticket sales across theaters in the U.S. and Canada. According to a report by ABC News published on Sunday, April 28, 2024, this thrilling victory marks a promising start for the film, which hit screens in 3,477 locations.
Directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, “Challengers” owes its success not just to luck but to a strategic press campaign led by Zendaya herself, alongside her talented castmates Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. Their efforts, which included a globetrotting tour to promote the film, paid off remarkably, drawing in audiences, especially young women, who comprised 58% of ticket buyers.
Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution for Amazon Studios and MGM, expressed his delight with the film’s opening numbers, highlighting the challenge of attracting this particular demographic to cinemas. “Looking at the audience who showed up, it’s really encouraging. It’s not the easiest audience to get to theaters,” remarked Wilson.
Zendaya’s star power was a significant draw for audiences, with 55% of viewers citing her as the reason for attending “Challengers.”
This weekend, Zendaya’s impact extended beyond “Challengers” with the re-release of “Dune: Part Two” in IMAX contributing nearly $2 million to the overall box office.
Zendaya’s rise to prominence in the film industry has been marked by standout performances in major franchises like “Spider-Man” and “Dune,” showcasing her ability to captivate audiences.
With “Challengers,” Zendaya faced a new challenge of leading a film solo, a testament to her star power.
Originally scheduled for a fall 2023 release at the Venice Film Festival, “Challengers” faced delays due to industry strikes. The decision to reschedule its debut weekend was made to coincide with Zendaya’s availability, ensuring robust promotional support for the film.
“Challengers” has received positive reviews, boasting an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning a B+ CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Guadagnino, known for his previous works like “Call Me By Your Name,” anticipates that “Challengers” will become his highest-grossing film, surpassing the $18 million mark.
Beyond its box office success, Amazon MGM Studios sees “Challengers” as a vehicle for downstream value on platforms like Prime Video, where it is expected to perform exceptionally well.
Wilson emphasized the importance of theatrical releases in launching films to broader audiences.
In the midst of “Challengers'” triumph, other films made their mark at the weekend box office. “Unsung Hero,” a faith-based drama, secured second place with $7.8 million in earnings.
The film, directed by Joel Smallbone, resonated with audiences, as evidenced by its A+ CinemaScore and 100% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
As the summer movie season approaches, the competition will intensify with anticipated releases like the action-comedy “The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
