The poll, conducted by PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist, unveiled a significant divide among voters regarding the perceived threat to democracy posed by Biden and Trump. While 46% of respondents expressed concerns about Biden weakening democracy with a second term, 48% had similar apprehensions about Trump’s potential return to the White House.

However, it was the response from independent voters that captured attention, with 53% believing Biden’s presidency would weaken democracy compared to 42% for Trump.

Del Percio, a Republican strategist, admitted her shock at these numbers, stating, “I wish I could have some really great insight to it, but I don’t know if it’s an outlier or not, because the other numbers of independents are going in the right direction.”

The revelation of such sentiments among independents highlights their pivotal role in the upcoming 2024 election, especially in battleground states like Wisconsin and Michigan. With both Biden and Trump having varying degrees of support within their parties, winning over independents becomes crucial for electoral success.

These findings prompt fundamental questions about democracy’s perception and leadership’s role in upholding its principles. As the election approaches, parties will analyze and appeal to diverse voter perspectives to secure victory and advance their agendas in an ever-evolving political landscape.
