Former President Barack Obama quietly met with Kenyan President William Ruto during Thursday’s White House state dinner hosted by President Joe Biden. Ruto confirmed the meeting through social media, describing it as brief yet significant.
Obama, whose paternal heritage traces back to Kenya, hosted Ruto at Blair House, the official guest residence for foreign dignitaries, according to Daily Mail reports from May 23, 2024.
This meeting highlighted Obama’s continued interest in African affairs and his personal connection to the region. Obama warmly welcomed Ruto to Washington and discussed various topics, reflecting his ongoing engagement with African issues.
Ruto shared on Facebook that their discussion covered opportunities for Africa’s youth, democratic progress, climate concerns, and peace and security challenges on the continent.
Although former presidents typically avoid White House state dinners to not overshadow the current administration, the Bidens invited the Obamas, acknowledging the importance of Obama’s ties to Kenya. Instead of attending the dinner, Obama chose a more private meeting at Blair House, followed by a reception at the White House.
This was not the first meeting between Obama and Ruto; they previously met in 2015 when Obama visited Kenya and Ruto was deputy president. Their continued dialogue underscores a shared commitment to addressing Africa’s pressing issues and advancing mutual interests.
