A recent Newsweek report from November 4, 2023, it’s become clear that President Joe Biden is facing a tricky situation in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Initially, he strongly supported Israel after the attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters on October 7, but now, his own party is pushing him to tone down that support.

The pressure on the president was most evident when an activist interrupted him on Wednesday, demanding he call for a ceasefire. Biden did mention the need for a humanitarian pause but emphasized that the situation is incredibly complex.

Some see this incident as a subtle shift in Biden’s position on the conflict. At first, he was firmly on Israel’s side. However, as the violence escalated with intense airstrikes on Gaza and a ground offensive, the Palestinian death toll increased. This, combined with pro-Palestinian protests across the U.S., has led to more progressive Democrats expressing their outrage.

Biden is now in a tough spot. On one hand, he wants to maintain the strong relationship with Israel, a long-time Middle East ally. On the other, he’s being criticized by the left for not doing more to restrain Israel’s actions.

According to Max Abrahms, a political science professor at Northeastern University, Biden is under increasing pressure from his party to dial down support for Israel. He’s now calling for a pause in the war, which some say could benefit Hamas, especially in a climate of growing antisemitism on the political left.

In the first two weeks following the attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad, Biden unequivocally stated, Israel has a right to defend itself—period. He also declared that his administration’s support for Israel is rock solid and unwavering and that Israel has a right and a duty to respond to these vicious attacks.

But since then, progressive Democratic lawmakers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Palestinian-American congresswoman Rashida Tlaib have been urging him to defuse the situation and demand a ceasefire.

Notably, younger Democrats, whose support Biden is aiming to secure, are generally showing more sympathy for Palestine than for Israel, according to polls. This pressure is expected to increase as Biden eyes a second term in 2024.

Biden’s situation is further complicated by his administration’s efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal, which his predecessor, Donald Trump, had abandoned. Israel strongly opposes this move, viewing Iran as a major threat.

In summary, Biden is dealing with a growing challenge within his own party, the expectations of his allies, and the complexities of a volatile conflict in the Israel-Hamas showdown.
