President Joe Biden addressed concerns about his recent debate performance against presumptive GOP competitor Donald Trump, admitting to supporters that his travel schedule contributed to his fatigue during the debate. Speaking at a fundraiser in McLean, Virginia, Biden acknowledged that he did not have his “best debate night” but expressed optimism about his campaign’s progress.

Biden attributed his lackluster performance to extensive international travel, including trips to France and the G7 summit in Italy, which involved navigating multiple time zones. “I decided to travel around the world a couple of times, going through I don’t know how many time zones,” Biden remarked, highlighting the toll it took on him. He candidly admitted, “For real, I think it was 15 time zones… I didn’t listen to my staff.”

The president also apologized to donors for his onstage fatigue but emphasized the importance of Democrats winning the election. He clarified that his comments were intended not as an excuse but as an explanation for his debate performance. Since the debate, Biden’s campaign has raised $38 million, underscoring continued support despite the scrutiny.

As Biden’s reelection bid progresses, the response within the Democratic Party remains mixed. While allies like former President Barack Obama and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have defended him, others, including Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, have called for him to reconsider his candidacy. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acknowledged concerns about Biden’s fitness but also emphasized the complexities of the political landscape heading into the party’s nominating convention in August.

This acknowledgment from Biden comes amid ongoing efforts by the White House to reassure voters about his ability to lead effectively, addressing concerns about his age and stamina on the campaign trail.
