Solidarity Among House Democrats
House Democrats are set to convene for their weekly party meeting on Tuesday morning, the first since the June 27 debate. This meeting, taking place off the U.S. Capitol campus, will have members surrender their phones at the start to prevent live leaks to reporters. The atmosphere is tense, but many Democrats remain resolute in their backing of Biden.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) expressed unwavering support, stating, “Joe Biden is our president. He is the Democratic nominee, and we’re going to fight like hell to get him reelected.” Despite concerns about Biden’s support in states like New Mexico, Stansbury reported strong enthusiasm for Biden and his achievements at recent political events.
Strong Support from Key Groups
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), affirmed Biden’s robust support within the group. “So long as he’s in the race, I’m with him,” Johnson said, ahead of a scheduled Zoom meeting with Biden. He added, “My sense is that the president enjoys strong support among the CBC.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) also voiced his support, saying on CNN, “I made clear the day after the debate, publicly, that I support President Joe Biden and the Democratic ticket. My position has not changed.” This sentiment was echoed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who stated, “The matter is closed.”
Endorsements from Influential Figures
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) praised both Jeffries and Biden, suggesting Biden should give more interviews to demonstrate his mental sharpness. “Joe Biden has been a great president. He deserves our respect,” Pelosi told a Politico reporter.
Voices of Skepticism
However, not all voices were in unanimous support. Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) suggested it might be time for Biden to step back, commenting, “I think it’s become clear that he’s not the best person to carry the Democratic message.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), while not directly opposing Biden, acknowledged the challenges faced in recent weeks and stressed the importance of making the best decisions for the future of democracy.
