When Sonic Youth legend Kim Gordon was asked for her “most controversial pop culture opinion,” she didn’t hesitate to mention Taylor Swift. In an interview with The Guardian earlier this week, Gordon candidly shared her thoughts on the “Cruel Summer” singer, expressing a lack of enthusiasm for Swift’s music.

Despite acknowledging that her opinion might not be particularly controversial, Gordon admitted, “I’m not really a fan” of the “Folklore” singer-songwriter. She elaborated, “I couldn’t tell you what her music sounded like, actually. When it comes to pop icons, I would choose Billie Eilish.”

Gordon’s unfamiliarity with Swift’s music contrasts with her recognition of Swift’s widespread appeal. Last year, she told Wallpaper magazine that Swift’s initial appeal likely stems from her approachable persona. By writing lyrics about personal experiences such as break-ups, Swift uses vulnerability intentionally, making her relatable to many fans.

During a Guardian interview in February, Gordon humorously noted she was journaling “just like Taylor Swift” when discussing her own lyrics. However, she clarified, “But you know, I’m not writing about sad things. Well, I guess a little sad. There is something about that kind of writing that’s powerful. It’s something you can do right now.”

When questioned about the possibility of opening for Swift, Gordon expressed doubt about the compatibility of their audiences. “It has to be a little bit of a fit,” she explained. Recalling past experiences, she mentioned, “Even when Sonic Youth toured with Neil Young, it was really hard, seeing hippies sitting there giving you the finger.” Despite not being familiar with Swift’s music, Gordon noted her admiration for Swift’s dedicated fanbase. “I was on a plane with all her fans recently on the way to Utah and they were all wearing merch. That I quite like. I think I’d just take a sweatshirt.”

Gordon’s remarks highlight her unique perspective within the music industry, emphasizing her preference for Billie Eilish over Taylor Swift while acknowledging the distinctive appeal each artist holds for their fans.
