GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has sparked controversy once again with his unconventional approach to pronouncing Vice President Kamala Harris’s name. During a speech at the Believers Summit, a conservative Christian event held by Turning Point Action in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump made headlines for his repeated mispronunciations of Harris’s first name.
“Some people think I mispronounce it on purpose, but actually, I’ve heard it said about seven different ways,” Trump remarked. “There are a lot of ways.”
Vice President Harris has clearly outlined the correct pronunciation of her name. In a public service announcement released during her 2016 Senate campaign, she suggested remembering it as “comma-la,” similar to the punctuation mark. This differs from the traditional Indian pronunciation, which is closer to “com’la.”
Despite these clarifications, Trump has consistently pronounced her name as “Ka-MA-luh,” placing undue emphasis on the second syllable. He explained his stance by saying, “I said, ‘don’t worry about it.’ It doesn’t matter what I say. I couldn’t care less if I mispronounce it or not. I couldn’t care less.”
Experts suggest that Trump’s mispronunciations may not be entirely accidental. Sociolinguistics professor Nicole Holliday noted that for some Republicans, intentionally mispronouncing Harris’s name could serve as a subtle indicator of their political stance. “If you’re a Republican, or let’s say an independent but leaning Republican, and you say, ‘Kuh-MA-luh,’ then everybody knows … either you’re not really for her, or you’re not consuming the media where people bother to say her name, right?” Holliday explained.
Trump’s speech was marked by other verbal slips as well. He referred to Harris as “Harrah” at one point and used the term “land ‘slade” instead of “landslide” in another instance.
These missteps have drawn criticism and further scrutiny as Trump continues to make headlines for his controversial statements and behaviors.
