Former President Donald Trump sidestepped questions about Senator JD Vance’s readiness to serve as vice president, asserting that the choice of a running mate holds little significance in presidential elections.

During a recent Q&A session at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention in Chicago, Trump addressed concerns about Vance’s “stumbles” and the “controversy” surrounding his selection. When asked about Vance’s preparedness in light of recent events, including a recent assassination attempt on Trump, the former president downplayed the importance of the vice presidential pick.

“I’ve always had great respect for him but… historically, the vice president in terms of the election does not have any impact, I mean virtually any impact,” Trump said. His comment underscores a broader perspective on the role of a running mate in influencing electoral outcomes.

Trump noted the rare instance of Lyndon Johnson’s ascent to the presidency after John F. Kennedy’s assassination as a notable exception to this rule. However, he clarified that this was more of a political necessity rather than a factor in electoral success.

In contrast, Trump did not address the example of Senator John McCain’s 2008 vice presidential choice, Sarah Palin. Palin’s selection is often cited as a factor that adversely affected McCain’s campaign. A 2010 Stanford University study estimated that Palin’s presence on the ticket cost McCain approximately 2.1 million votes, highlighting how a vice presidential choice can impact electoral results.

The focus on Vance’s qualifications comes amid broader scrutiny of Trump’s age, as he seeks re-election at 78, mirroring concerns about President Joe Biden’s age. Despite this, Trump remains confident that the choice of a vice president will not sway the election’s outcome.

As the election season intensifies, Trump’s comments reflect a strategic approach to addressing concerns about his running mate while maintaining focus on broader campaign goals.
