Queensland Premier Steven Miles has thrown his support behind a campaign to overturn the lifetime ban imposed on Australian radio hosts Hamish Blake and Andy Lee from entering the Olympic Village. The ban, stemming from a high-profile incident at the 2012 London Olympics, has now become a cause célèbre as the 2024 Paris Olympics approach.
Earlier this month, Blake and Lee revealed that they had been banned for life from the Olympic Village after an adventurous escapade during the 2012 Games. The incident began when a mix-up with their access application led to their denial of entry. Determined to attend, the pair were smuggled into the Village but were soon caught by security. As a result, they were banned for life.

In response to this, a petition has been launched to lift the ban, gaining traction with the backing of notable figures and the Queensland Premier himself. The petition, initiated by Triple M’s Rush Hour hosts Liesl Jones, Liam, and Dobbo, has already gathered over 250 signatures from supporters including celebrities like Will Anderson and Grant Hackett.
Premier Miles has publicly supported the campaign, stating, “This does sound like a real injustice to me. I’ve signed the petition, and I’ll do whatever I can to try to convince the IOC to make changes. Obviously, come 2032, we’ll have some say in the arrangements then too. I think Hamish and Andy have served their time, and it’s time to let them back in.”
Liesl Jones inquired whether Premier Miles had any connections within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who could help reverse the ban. Miles responded positively, suggesting that John Coates, the current IOC vice president, could be a valuable ally in this effort. “John Coates is the man you want to talk to,” he said, noting Coates’ significant influence and frequent visits to Queensland.

The petition’s momentum continues to build as more supporters join the cause. Hamish and Andy, who previously discussed their Olympic Village adventure on Triple M’s The Rush Hour, have expressed their regret over the incident. They recounted how they were mistakenly barred from entry due to an error in their security application. Despite the mishap, an unnamed Australian facilitated their sneaky entry into the Village, which ended with them being caught and banned after a brief but memorable encounter with the athletes.
As the 2024 Paris Olympics draw nearer, the campaign to lift Blake and Lee’s ban from the Olympic Village has become a symbol of redemption for the comedic duo, reflecting broader themes of forgiveness and second chances. With the support of influential figures like Premier Miles, the possibility of a reversal remains on the horizon.
