A demonstration organized by progressive groups at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C., calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, escalated into chaos on Wednesday. The protest, led by IfNotNow, Jewish Voice for Peace Action, and the Democratic Socialists of America, aimed to pressure the Biden administration to push for an end to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.

Protesters, displaying signs with messages like Let Gaza Live and Biden: End the Blockade, initially held a peaceful vigil. However, tensions rose when some demonstrators allegedly attempted to break into the building, leading to clashes with police. Chants of Cease-fire now! and Free, free Palestine! filled the air.

The police responded by using batons and pepper spray, making arrests in the process. One person was confirmed arrested for assaulting a police officer. Despite the turmoil, the organizers insisted their cause was pro-peace and pro-justice, rejecting accusations of being anti-Israel or anti-Semitic.

The protest was part of a global wave of solidarity actions supporting the Palestinian cause. Critics, like Rep. Brad Sherman, labeled it pro-terrorism and anti-Israel, accusing protesters of trying to undermine the Democratic Party. Organizers countered, stating their goal was accountability and a push for a more progressive foreign policy, not harm to the party.

The demonstration unfolded as reports suggested progress in brokering a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas, although both sides expressed reluctance to halt hostilities without meeting their demands.
