Social media exchange, Elon Musk’s attempt to draw a parallel between his space exploration company, SpaceX, and the beloved “Star Trek” franchise did not sit well with a key figure from the series. Robert Picardo, who has been a part of the “Star Trek” universe since 1995, took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Musk’s use of the fictional Starfleet Academy to promote SpaceX.

On Monday, Musk posted on X, stating, “Let’s make Starfleet Academy real!” This reference was intended to align SpaceX’s mission with the ideals of exploration and innovation seen in “Star Trek.” However, it quickly sparked backlash, especially from those familiar with the deeper ethos of the franchise.

Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek,” envisioned Starfleet as a symbol of equality, diversity, and peace in the galaxy. Musk’s recent actions and statements, however, seem to contrast sharply with these values. Research indicates a significant rise in racist content on X since Musk’s acquisition in 2022, and his public stance against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts has only added fuel to the fire. Furthermore, Musk’s controversial relationship with his daughter, whom he has disowned following her gender transition, has further marred his public image.

Picardo, who portrayed The Doctor on “Star Trek: Voyager” and has also appeared in “Deep Space Nine” and the feature film “Star Trek: First Contact,” didn’t hold back in his response. He tweeted, “First step: Support a leader that embodies Starfleet values like diversity, inclusion, and ethical behavior.” This pointed remark was met with both applause from “Star Trek” fans and criticism from Musk’s followers, who argue that DEI initiatives undermine a merit-based society.

Musk has long professed his love for “Star Trek,” even donning a jacket with the series’ emblem during a meeting with Argentinian President Javier Milei earlier this year. Yet, Picardo’s critique highlights the disconnect between Musk’s self-proclaimed admiration for the franchise and the principles it represents.

Picardo’s post also garnered support from another iconic figure—Lynda Carter, famously known for her role as Wonder Woman. She responded on X, saying, “Dear @RobertPicardo, you are a gem,” further solidifying the actor’s stance.

As Musk continues to push SpaceX toward interplanetary travel, his invocation of “Star Trek” imagery may face increasing scrutiny from those who hold the franchise’s values close to heart. The exchange between Picardo and Musk serves as a reminder that the ideals depicted in science fiction can often be at odds with the realities of modern leadership.
