A recent report by Yeni Safak on November 19, 2023, President Joe Biden expressed support for a revitalized Palestinian Authority to govern both Gaza and the West Bank, outlining his vision for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Biden conveyed this during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.

The President emphasized that merely achieving a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is not synonymous with peace. Instead, he stressed the importance of a united Gaza Strip and West Bank under a revitalized Palestinian Authority for lasting stability. Despite condemning the bombing of a Gaza hospital, Biden reiterated unwavering support for Israel, promising to provide whatever is necessary for its defense.

Biden’s approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict has centered on supporting Israel, condemning Hamas, and urging a de-escalation of violence while safeguarding civilians. He has also resumed U.S. aid to the Palestinians, intending to provide $235 million, with a significant portion going to the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa.

In a conversation with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Biden offered full support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. This marked the first direct contact between the two leaders since Biden took office in January. The President stressed his commitment to advancing prosperity, security, and freedom for both Israelis and Palestinians, aiming for a negotiated two-state solution.

Recognizing the political fragmentation and lack of representation, especially in Gaza under Hamas rule, Biden advocates for a revitalized Palestinian Authority as the governance structure for both Gaza and the West Bank. However, the proposal faces challenges, requiring reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah, the restoration of the Palestinian Authority’s presence in Gaza, and a revival of stalled peace talks with Israel.

Despite acknowledging the complexities, Biden remains determined to collaborate with regional partners and the international community to achieve a peaceful and just resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
