In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Elvis Costello expressed his strong support for Olivia Rodrigo, especially regarding the riff in her song “Brutal.” The track, which opens her acclaimed album Sour, has drawn comparisons to Costello’s own 1978 hit “Pump It Up.”

Costello emphasized the importance of musical inspiration among artists, stating, “It’s a shared language of music.” He acknowledged that many artists often draw from previous works and incorporate elements into their own songs. He noted, “Other people clearly felt differently about other songs on that record,” referring to past controversies surrounding Rodrigo’s music.

The discussion around Rodrigo’s work isn’t new. The young star faced scrutiny over the similarities between her singles and those of other artists. Notably, her song “Deja Vu” was initially said to be influenced by Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” leading to Swift receiving credit as a co-writer. Similarly, Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” was compared to Paramore’s “Misery Business,” resulting in Hayley Williams and Josh Farro being given credits and royalties after listeners pointed out the resemblance.

Costello has consistently defended Rodrigo’s creative process. In 2021, he responded to a comment on social media that highlighted the similarities between “Brutal” and “Pump It Up.” His response highlighted the essence of rock and roll: “You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did.” He further referenced musical legends like Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry, showing how influential artists continue to inspire one another.

In his recent remarks, Costello’s stance remains clear: taking legal action over musical inspirations is unnecessary and counterproductive. He believes in the value of artistic exchange and collaboration, rather than litigation.
