Tragic Saturday night shooting at the Morna Lounge and Grill on Acushnet Avenue has left the New Bedford community reeling. Danielson Varela, a 19-year-old resident of the city, has been charged in connection with the incident, which resulted in the death of 27-year-old Cristiano Macedo and injuries to two women.
The devastating event unfolded inside the popular lounge, where authorities report Varela allegedly opened fire. The two female victims, who sustained gunshot wounds, were treated for their injuries, while Macedo tragically lost his life at the scene.
Varela was apprehended on Sunday and now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and two counts of assault and battery with a firearm. He is expected to be arraigned Monday in New Bedford District Court.
The case remains under active investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with New Bedford Police and homicide prosecutors. Officials have not yet disclosed details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting or Varela’s alleged motive.
