Acknowledging the tragic loss of over two dozen transgender lives to violence in 2023, Biden expressed particular concern about the disproportionate violence faced by women of color. Despite alarming figures from sources like the Human Rights Campaign indicating over 300 incidents, Biden emphasized that the battle against prejudice and violence is ongoing.

While each death is a tragedy, the actual toll is likely even higher, said the president. We must never stay silent in the face of hate and must recommit ourselves to fighting until all Americans can live free from discrimination.

Biden’s administration has actively taken steps to combat such violence and reinforce LGBTQI+ rights. These initiatives include lifting the ban on transgender individuals openly serving in the military, launching the LGBTQI+ Community Safety Partnership to provide safety resources, and pledging to expand access to transgender care.

Despite facing opposition from Republican-led states, which introduced over 100 anti-trans bills in 2023, threatening transgender rights, Biden remains steadfast. These bills impose restrictions on gender surgeries, community resources, and transgender care. In response, Biden had issued an executive order in 2022 to counter these restrictive bills and cease funding for harmful practices like conversion therapy.

Biden’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the rights and safety of transgender and LGBTQI+ Americans signifies a significant stance against discrimination, advocating for freedom and fairness.
