#CHICAGO, IL – In a heartbreaking turn of events, #Tyshawn Johnson, a 17-year-old from #Chicago’s South Side, was identified as the victim of a fatal shooting in an Andersonville alley on Tuesday night. Initially misreported as a 21-year-old man, Johnson’s identity was confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office early Wednesday.
The tragedy occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the 5400 block of North Ashland Avenue. Chicago police responded to reports of a vehicle crash in an alley and discovered two victims at the scene. Johnson was found inside the crashed car with a gunshot wound to his head and was pronounced dead on-site.
A second victim, a 26-year-old man, suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and neck. He was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition. According to police, the injured survivor stated that the shooting happened while the vehicle was in the alley.
However, authorities did not receive reports of gunfire in the immediate area, leading investigators to believe the shooting may have occurred elsewhere. The car, possibly already involved in the shooting, ended up crashing into a garage in the Andersonville alley.
The Chicago Police Department’s Area 3 detectives are actively working to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made.
In a statement addressing the incident, 40th Ward Alderman Andre Vasquez acknowledged the lack of gunfire reports in the neighborhood and extended his condolences to the victims’ families. “The loss of young lives to gun violence is a devastating reality for many in our city. My thoughts are with those impacted by this senseless act,” Vasquez said.
Community members are urged to come forward with any information that might assist the investigation. As Chicago grapples with the persistent issue of gun violence, incidents like these underscore the urgent need for actionable solutions to protect its neighborhoods.
This tragic event has once again drawn attention to the challenges faced by communities impacted by gun violence. The city mourns the loss of a promising young life and hopes for justice for Tyshawn Johnson and the others affected.
