Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) expressed deep concern on Thursday over President-elect Donald Trump’s actions, including the removal of Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) as chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Blumenthal warned that this move signals a troubling priority for Trump — placing personal loyalty above national security and the interests of the United States.
During an interview on CNN, Blumenthal emphasized that Turner’s ousting, widely believed to be influenced by Trump’s pressure, marks the beginning of a broader pattern. He noted that it reflects the incoming administration’s tendency to favor loyalty over competence. “This sends a message to both the House and Senate that Trump will prioritize personal allegiance above all else,” Blumenthal stated.
The senator, who has long supported stronger oversight in intelligence, shared his disappointment in Turner’s removal, calling it a setback for effective governance. “It’s disappointing and disgusting that someone with Turner’s qualifications is replaced with a less experienced individual,” Blumenthal added.
Blumenthal also criticized Trump’s cabinet nominees, stating that they too seem to prioritize loyalty. He pointed to the nomination of an FBI director who plans to remove investigators deemed disloyal, as well as Trump’s nominees for Attorney General and Department of Defense, who seem to embrace similar purging policies.
This ongoing purge, according to Blumenthal, is part of a larger, dangerous trend that could undermine the integrity of critical government institutions.
