Peaceful immigration protest in Salem, Oregon, took a shocking turn when a chaotic street takeover erupted, forcing police to intervene and arrest five people. What started as a demonstration against immigration enforcement quickly spiraled out of control as drivers began drifting, doing donuts, and blocking traffic—plunging the city into turmoil.
Law enforcement across the U.S. is cracking down on street takeovers, which have become a growing menace in major cities. While some view them as harmless fun for car enthusiasts, authorities warn that these events often bring destruction, lawlessness, and even violent crime.
From Protest to Pandemonium
According to KPTV Fox 14, the protest began peacefully on Saturday, February 1st, near Northeast Lancaster Drive and Northeast Market Street. By mid-afternoon, the demonstration had swelled to nearly 300 people. But as the evening unfolded, chaos took over.
At around 8 p.m., the protest was no longer about immigration. Instead, the streets became a playground for reckless drivers. Witnesses reported seeing people throwing objects at cars, setting off fireworks, and completely shutting down traffic. Around 50 individuals were on foot, contributing to the mayhem.
Police Crack Down—Illegal Gun Seized
Salem police responded swiftly, conducting traffic stops and arresting multiple individuals. Among the five taken into custody, charges included reckless driving and disorderly conduct. Officers also seized an illegal firearm, heightening concerns about the dangers of these street takeovers.
The arrested individuals ranged in age from 19 to 34, underscoring the growing participation of young adults in these dangerous activities.
Salem’s Police Chief Speaks Out
Salem Police Chief expressed his concerns about the escalating situation, noting that the incident stretched their resources thin, especially with other emergencies unfolding at the same time—including an armed kidnapping.
“Saturday’s unruly protest, along with other emergency calls, strained our limited patrol staffing resources. Multiple Salem officers were called in from home, and partner agencies also responded to ensure safety was maintained,” he stated.
While Salem police managed to restore order, the incident highlights the growing threat of street takeovers across the country—and the urgent need for stronger enforcement to keep cities safe.
