Chicago, IL – A night of celebration ended in tragedy when 29-year-old Jamia “Mya” Taylor was fatally shot near 79th Street and Bennett Avenue in the early hours of February 9, 2025. The young mother of six, who had reportedly been attending a birthday gathering, was gunned down in the street—her killer vanishing into the night.
Chicago Police Department officers responded to the horrifying scene around 5:25 a.m. after multiple reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Taylor unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and body. Emergency responders rushed her to the University of Chicago Medical Center, but she was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

Authorities have yet to make any arrests, and no suspects have been identified. Investigators believe Taylor was approached by an unknown assailant who opened fire before fleeing, leaving behind chaos and heartbreak.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed Taylor’s identity, and her devastated family now faces an unimaginable loss. With six children now left without their mother, the community is rallying for justice.
