The original pitch for DOGE was simple: Musk and his associates would lead a high-powered advisory panel to root out wasteful government spending and modernize federal technology. Trump himself championed the effort, and Musk, ever the showman, even embraced the role by sporting “Tech Support” T-shirts as a symbolic nod to his supposed position in the administration.
But then, without fanfare or public acknowledgment, the plan morphed. When Trump officially established DOGE through executive order, it was no longer an independent advisory panel. Instead, the U.S. Digital Service—an existing White House office—was rebranded as the U.S. DOGE Service. The shift was buried in the fine print of a bureaucratic document that most Americans would never see.
And now, yet another twist: Politico reports that Elon Musk is not the leader of DOGE. In fact, according to a late-night court filing from the White House, he has no actual role in running the initiative. A three-page declaration from a senior administration official states that Musk’s official title is merely “senior adviser to the president,” a position with no formal authority over government decisions.
This revelation, delivered by Joshua Fisher, director of the White House’s Office of Administration, directly contradicts months of statements from both Trump and Musk. The administration had consistently portrayed DOGE as a Musk-led initiative to streamline (or dismantle) the federal bureaucracy. Trump himself, just last week, encouraged Musk to brief reporters on DOGE’s findings, reinforcing the illusion of his leadership.
Musk, for his part, had also played along, frequently using the word “we” when discussing DOGE’s activities. Now, as this court filing shatters that carefully constructed image, questions swirl about the true nature of Musk’s involvement—and whether the public was deliberately misled.
