Bush is skipping a White House ceremony honoring his late mother, Barbara Bush—sidestepping an event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump and attended by Trump allies. The quiet but powerful absence adds another layer to the long-standing tensions between the Bush family and Donald Trump.
Scheduled for Thursday in the East Room, the event will unveil a new commemorative stamp celebrating the life of the former First Lady. Though other Bush family members, including Doro Bush Koch—George W.’s sister and a featured speaker—are expected to attend, the former president is opting out, with White House officials confirming he won’t be there.
The decision isn’t entirely surprising. George W. Bush has never endorsed Trump, even during three separate presidential runs. Instead of casting his vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020, he wrote in Condoleezza Rice—his former secretary of state—as a symbolic gesture of defiance. Over the years, he’s maintained a careful distance from the MAGA movement and its leader, even as he acknowledged Trump’s electoral victories.
