Elon Musk isn’t holding back after Bill Gates accused him of causing harm to the world’s most vulnerable children. The war of words between the two tech titans escalated when Gates slammed Musk’s leadership role in the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a position Musk held under former President Donald Trump. In response, Musk shot back with a bold five-word rebuttal: “Gates is a huge liar.”
The conflict centers around Musk’s efforts to cut government spending, including massive reductions to foreign aid agencies like the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Gates, known for his philanthropic work, has voiced concerns that these cuts could have dire consequences, particularly for the world’s poorest. He went as far as accusing Musk of directly contributing to the suffering of children in impoverished regions, claiming the loss of life-saving resources could lead to a surge in diseases like measles, HIV, and polio.
Musk’s stance, however, has been unapologetically critical of USAID, which he once labeled a “criminal organization.” He argues that these agencies, which spent millions annually on humanitarian efforts, had become bloated and ineffective. Musk’s blunt approach to government efficiency led to some departments cutting back their workforce, only to backtrack after political pushback. This, however, did not sit well with Gates, who highlighted the impact on vulnerable populations, especially in conflict zones like Gaza.
Gates’ accusations went further, claiming Musk halted critical medical programs, including those preventing HIV transmission from mothers to children in Gaza. He suggested Musk’s cuts could now result in children being infected with HIV because the necessary resources were no longer available. Musk, however, seems determined to defend his actions, calling Gates a liar and challenging the narrative he’s pushing.
