A frantic search is underway for Virginia high school football coach Travis Lee Turner, who disappeared on November 20, 2025, in the midst of his Union High School Bears’ undefeated season. The 46-year-old, based in Wise County, was reported missing after authorities visited his Appalachia home to investigate an ongoing complaint.
Virginia State Police say they deployed search-and-rescue teams, K-9 units, and drones in the rugged terrain around Turner’s last known location.
On Sunday, he was officially listed in the state’s missing persons database. Turner is described as roughly 6-foot-3, about 260 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and glasses.
Officials stress that when law enforcement agents arrived at Turner’s residence, their purpose was not to place him under arrest. However, they learned en route that he was no longer at home. Sharp concern has rippled through the Big Stone Gap community, especially as the football team and its passionate supporters push forward in the playoffs.
In Turner’s absence, assistant coach Jay Edwards has taken over leadership duties. Despite the turmoil, the Bears maintained their momentum: they secured a 12–0 win over Graham High School to advance toward the regional final.
Wise County Public Schools announced that a staff member unrelated to the coaching staff has been placed on administrative leave while an external agency investigates an unspecified allegation. The district has clarified that this is standard procedure and does not necessarily indicate guilt.
Turner has led Union High’s football program since 2011 and is well-known in the community, both for his coaching record and his past as a standout college quarterback.
