New York Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron wasted no time reasserting control over the courtroom after an appellate court ruling on Thursday reinstated a gag order against former President Donald Trump in an ongoing civil fraud trial.

Moments after the appeals court decision, CBS News reported that Engoron directed a stern message to Trump’s legal team, emphasizing his expectation for full compliance with the gag order that prohibits Trump from disparaging court staff.

“I intend to enforce the gag orders rigorously and vigorously, and I want to make sure counsel informs their client,” declared Engoron.

The judge’s statement was a clear indication that he remains firmly in charge, despite efforts by Trump’s legal team to overturn speech restrictions related to the case.

Engoron initially imposed the limited gag order on October 3 after Trump targeted his clerk on social media. Despite accruing $15,000 in fines for violating the order twice the following month, Trump continued his attacks, leading Engoron to expand the gag order to include all attorneys involved.

The gag order was temporarily lifted on November 16 as the appeals court considered Trump’s argument that it violated his First Amendment rights. During this period, Trump and his associates resumed their attacks on the court clerk, reinforcing Engoron’s position that the order was essential for protecting his staff.

On Thursday, the appeals panel sided with Judge Engoron, and the reinstated gag order remains in effect as Trump’s high-stakes trial continues. Potential steep financial penalties loom if jurors find Trump’s real estate company criminally conspired to commit fraud.

Legal expert Dan Alonso noted that Engoron’s swift reassertion of authority “sent an unmistakable signal that he is back in the driver’s seat.” While the judge has displayed remarkable patience, there is a palpable intolerance for further antics.

Trump’s attorney, Christopher Kise, decried the ruling, stating, “it is tragic for the rule of law” that Trump cannot comment on perceived bias by court staff. Engoron, however, has vigorously defended the conduct of clerk Allison Greenfield as proper and ethical.

For now, Trump and his legal team must refrain from commenting on Greenfield or risk facing Engoron’s sanctions. The judge’s firm words suggest he will apply sanctions aggressively in the event of further violations, potentially complicating Trump’s legal challenges as the case approaches its conclusion next month. The question remains whether the defiant ex-president will comply with judicial orders or maintain his confrontational approach.
