House Republicans, under the leadership of Representative Jim Jordan, have instigated a thorough oversight probe into U.S. intelligence agencies, citing allegations of obstruction pertaining to a 2020 Senate investigation into the financial dealings of the Biden family.
In a letter addressed to National Intelligence Director Avril Haines, Jordan, who serves as the chairman of the House Weaponization Select Subcommittee, conveyed that both the House Judiciary Committee and its subcommittee are actively scrutinizing claims suggesting interference by the U.S. Intelligence Community in the 2020 congressional inquiry.
As detailed by the Conservative Brief on Sunday, December 3, 2023, these allegations stem from the intelligence community’s purported false accusations against Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley, accusing them of promoting Russian ‘disinformation.’
The genesis of this controversy traces back three years when Senators Johnson and Grassley initiated an investigation into allegations of influence peddling involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. On August 6, 2020, FBI officials delivered a “defensive” briefing to the lawmakers, categorizing the claims as misinformation orchestrated by Russia.
Representative Jim Jordan is actively seeking information from Director Haines, specifically requesting “all drafts of the script” used during the briefing and comprehensive details about the so-called ‘defensive’ briefing.
In his letter, Jordan emphasized that the senators’ inquiry into Hunter Biden’s financial connections faced impediments due to the briefing, which was later leaked to the public. Senators Grassley and Johnson clarified in a letter to intelligence officials that the briefing primarily contained information they were already aware of and was unrelated to their Biden investigation.
Expressing frustration, they highlighted that the unnecessary FBI briefing provided Democrats and the media with a platform to disseminate a false narrative, accusing them of advancing Russian disinformation.
A noteworthy development in August 2022 involved 51 intelligence officials signing an open letter, suggesting that the evidence of Biden family influence peddling found on Hunter’s laptop, as published by the New York Post, was a product of Russian disinformation.
Rep. Jim Jordan, this week, announced an additional investigative effort by the House Judiciary Committee into reports of the Justice Department spying on members of Congress and their staff. During an appearance on Fox Business’s “The Evening Edit,” Jordan revealed confirmation of spying on congressional staffers and emphasized the urgency to determine the extent of this surveillance.
Letters have been dispatched to the Department of Justice and collaborating carriers, seeking phone and email records from congressional staffers, raising questions about the potential extension of this surveillance to members and additional staff. This inquiry aims to unveil the complete scope of potential spying activities, surpassing the knowledge derived from previous instances, such as the surveillance of President Trump’s campaign.
