Former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner has raised concerns about the potential consequences of the legal cases involving ex-President Donald Trump. Kirschner warns that if Trump is not treated like any other defendant, it could seriously impact the United States.

Trump, currently the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is facing a total of 91 felony charges across four criminal cases, two of which are federal. Despite the gravity of these charges, Trump has pleaded not guilty, labeling the prosecutions against him as a political witch hunt.

Kirschner, a vocal Trump critic and MSNBC legal analyst, highlights a perceived imbalance in how high-profile figures are treated in the justice system compared to ordinary citizens. He argues that the failure to hold powerful individuals accountable under the law could undermine the rule of law in the country.

I think our inability to sort of hold accountable, what I call ruling class criminals, high government officials who obviously broke the law, and hold them accountable the way we would hold anybody else accountable, Kirschner expressed in an interview with Newsweek.

Kirschner points to Trump’s federal election subversion case as an example of preferential treatment before the trial has begun. He emphasizes that such differential treatment could weaken the rule of law, as demonstrated by the judge’s partial gag order on Trump in October.

The rule of law, a crucial principle ensuring equal treatment under the law for all individuals, is at stake. If compromised, it may erode social order and trust in the justice system. The handling and outcome of Trump’s legal cases could set a precedent for how high-ranking officials are treated, potentially conveying a message that those in power are exempt from the law—a scenario that could threaten the very foundation of democracy in the United States.
