Hamtramck, Michigan, a small city renowned for its diverse immigrant population, finds itself in turmoil following Mayor Amer Ghalib’s endorsement of Donald Trump. Ghalib, the first Arab American and Muslim to lead Hamtramck, has sparked significant backlash from the local Muslim community and longtime residents who once championed the city’s welcoming spirit.
Elected in 2021, Ghalib’s leadership has made headlines for several reasons. His administration, featuring an all-Muslim City Council, initially promoted inclusivity. However, tensions rose when Ghalib and his conservative allies banned the LGBTQ Pride flag from city property, causing alarm among progressives who feared it would tarnish the city’s reputation as a safe haven for immigrants.
The situation escalated dramatically when Ghalib endorsed Trump, a move that many found contradictory, given Trump’s history of implementing a travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries, including Yemen, Ghalib’s homeland.
