Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Baldwin experienced a mix of relief and somber reflection after the unexpected dismissal of the Rust case against him. The trial, which held the actor facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, took a dramatic turn on July 12, 2024, when Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled to throw out the case due to a late discovery of evidence, effectively preventing any future criminal charges against Baldwin on this matter.

Following the judge’s decision, a source close to the Baldwins revealed to PEOPLE that Alec, aged 66, and Hilaria, aged 40, were deeply relieved but did not find cause for celebration. Instead, they hugged each other in tears, marking the end of a distressing legal ordeal. The source emphasized the couple’s perspective: “It’s been a sad situation, and there is no winning here. They didn’t celebrate. They were very worried and are grateful now that they are able to spend the rest of the summer with their kids.”

Prior to the trial’s unexpected turn, sources close to the family had indicated that Hilaria Baldwin maintained faith in Alec’s innocence. The ordeal has been described as extremely stressful for both of them, with a longing for closure and a return to normalcy in their lives.

The incident in question occurred on the set of the Western movie “Rust” in New Mexico, where Baldwin was handling a prop gun that discharged live rounds, tragically resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The aftermath of Hutchins’s death has also seen ongoing civil lawsuits.

In response to the outcome, Alec Baldwin took to Instagram to express his gratitude to those who supported him and his family throughout the ordeal. Meanwhile, legal proceedings continue for others involved in the incident, including Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
