The identities of the American and Australian citizens who went missing in Mexico have been confirmed after their bodies were discovered in a well, according to local authorities.
The bodies of Ian Hirschsohn and his girlfriend, Kathy Harvey, both from San Diego, California, were found at a vacation rental property near Ensenada, Mexico. The couple was reported missing last month when their family lost contact with them.
Mexican authorities confirmed that the bodies found in the well were indeed those of Hirschsohn and Harvey. The cause of their deaths has not yet been determined, and an investigation is ongoing.
Hirschsohn and Harvey were staying at a rental property in El Socorrito, a small beach community located about 18 miles south of Ensenada. According to the property owner, the couple had been renting the home for the past three months.
The property owner reported the couple missing on September 2 after not hearing from them for several days. Concerned about their well-being, the owner went to check on them and discovered their belongings still inside the rental home, but no sign of the couple.
Local authorities initiated a search operation, which led to the discovery of their bodies in a well on the property. The bodies were recovered by the Mexican Navy and subsequently identified.
The United States Department of State and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are providing consular assistance to the families of the deceased.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of Hirschsohn and Harvey remain unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not ruled out foul play, and further forensic examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
