Former New Jersey Governor and 2024 Republican presidential hopeful, Chris Christie, asserted on Friday that former President Donald Trump would face conviction in 2024 amid multiple criminal charges across jurisdictions, as reported by CNBC on November 28, 2023.
In an exclusive interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Christie, who is challenging Trump for the Republican nomination, delved into his assessment of Trump’s legal predicaments, encompassing a staggering 91 felony counts across state and federal courts.
“I think it’s a certainty in my view that he will be convicted of at least one of those charges, if not more,” remarked Christie, underscoring the potential ramifications on Trump’s political future. “And I think that will have a huge impact on his ability to run for president again, and on his ability to govern if he ever got there, which I don’t think he will.”
Christie expressed his lack of surprise at the indictments against Trump, emphasizing that he had cautioned the former president about the legal repercussions both before and after the 2020 election. He detailed his advice, urging Trump to gracefully concede the election and cooperate with the transition, counsel that went unheeded as Trump pursued unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud to overturn the election results.
“I told him the truth, and he didn’t want to hear it,” Christie asserted. “And now he’s paying the price for it. And he’s going to pay a bigger price for it in 2024, when he faces the American people and the American justice system.”
Confident in his ability to secure victory in both the Republican primary and the general election against President Joe Biden, Christie criticized Biden as a weak and incompetent leader. He emphasized his superior record, vision, and communication skills, stating, “I’m not running against Donald Trump. I’m running for president of the United States. And I think I’m the best person to do that job.”
Christie officially announced his presidential bid on June 6, 2023, at a town hall in Manchester, New Hampshire. Challenging Trump, who remains the frontrunner in most polls, Christie garnered an endorsement from former President George W. Bush, critical of Trump’s policies and behavior.
With an optimistic outlook on winning early primary states, especially New Hampshire, Christie, with a strong grassroots organization, aims to appeal to voters in his home state of New Jersey. Scheduled for June 6, New Jersey’s primary aligns with California and New York, and Christie believes he can secure victories in both blue and red states, citing his message, team, and momentum as superior.
“I think I have the best message, the best team, and the best momentum,” Christie asserted. “And I think I have the best chance of beating Donald Trump and Joe Biden. And that’s why I’m running for president. Because the truth matters. And the American people deserve the truth.”
