In a recent poll conducted by Morning Consult, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are deadlocked in a hypothetical 2024 presidential race, each garnering 44 percent support among registered voters. The survey, held from March 18 to 20 and encompassing 1,994 registered voters, carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
According to the findings, released on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Biden’s approval rating has plummeted to a new nadir of 41 percent, contrasting with Trump’s favorable rating climbing to 45 percent, a significant increase since leaving office.
The poll presented respondents with four options – Biden, Trump, someone else, or undecided – and the results underscore a tight race, with both candidates capturing 44 percent of voters. Nine percent expressed a preference for an alternative candidate, while 3 percent remained undecided.
Enthusiasm levels among supporters of both candidates are remarkably similar, with 79 percent of Biden voters and 78 percent of Trump voters expressing varying degrees of enthusiasm for their respective choices.
Notably, the survey also delved into public sentiment regarding the job performance of President Biden and the personal favorability of former President Trump. Biden’s approval rating has dipped to 41 percent, marking the lowest since assuming office, coupled with a disapproval rating spiking to 55 percent. In contrast, Trump’s favorability has surged to 45 percent, reaching its highest point since leaving office, while unfavorability has dropped to 51 percent.
The results indicate a decline in Biden’s popularity as he grapples with multifaceted challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, immigration crisis, and foreign policy matters. Conversely, Trump appears to be experiencing a resurgence in popularity within his steadfast base, fueled by claims of a rigged 2020 election and hints of a potential 2024 comeback.
As the poll unveils a competitive landscape for the 2024 presidential race, both candidates face strong support and vocal criticism. The findings also suggest a potential opening for a third-party candidate to attract voters dissatisfied with both Biden and Trump.
Morning Consult’s survey adds to a series of recent polls gauging public opinion on the 2024 presidential race. While results vary across different polls, a consensus emerges that the race is too close to call at this juncture, with significant potential for changes over the next three years.
