Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney has accused Fox News anchor Sean Hannity of shielding former President Donald Trump from accountability, particularly regarding his alleged pursuit of a dictatorship post-January 6. Cheney asserts that Hannity, aware of the danger Trump posed, consistently attempts to downplay and excuse Trump’s controversial statements.
During a recent town hall in Iowa, Hannity reportedly provided Trump with opportunities to refute claims about his authoritarian ambitions, yet Trump evaded giving a clear answer. Cheney, speaking on MSNBC, emphasized Hannity’s prior knowledge of Trump’s threat, citing text messages between Hannity and Kayleigh McEnany on January 7. According to Cheney, Hannity and others were actively trying to distance themselves from Trump, recognizing the peril he posed to the country.
Cheney criticized Hannity for repeatedly coming to Trump’s defense when his statements veered into illegal or extreme territory. She urged Americans not to dismiss Trump’s rhetoric, emphasizing the need to take his words seriously and literally. In light of Trump’s past actions, Cheney stressed the importance of remaining vigilant and not becoming desensitized to the severity of his statements.
