At a Turning Point USA conference, Alina Habba, a lawyer for Donald Trump, proudly shared that she and the ex-president were fined close to $1 million for submitting lawsuits criticized by a judge as frivolous.
Addressing a conservative gathering in Phoenix, Arizona, Habba informed the audience about a ruling from Florida District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks earlier this year. The judge had previously dismissed Trump’s lawsuits, which alleged a conspiracy by numerous defendants to harm the Republican’s 2016 election prospects by highlighting supposed connections between his campaign and Russia.
In September 2022, Middlebrooks initially dismissed the case but later, in January, sanctioned Trump and Habba for their persistent misuse of the courts through meritless lawsuits, citing a continuing pattern. Middlebrooks instructed Trump and Habba to collectively cover legal expenses amounting to almost $938,000 for the 31 defendants in their legal cases, including the Democratic National Committee, Hillary Clinton, and ex-FBI director James Comey.
Habba confidently announced at the Turning Point USA event that she and Trump covered the fine, emphasizing that the judge’s decision to dismiss the lawsuits and impose sanctions on them went relatively unnoticed in the media back then.
Habba pointed out that Middlebrooks was nominated to the bench in 1997 by Bill Clinton, the spouse of Trump’s 2016 Democratic election rival. Despite facing criticism, Habba expressed determination to continue the legal fight.
This revelation at the Turning Point USA event has sparked discussions about the legal challenges faced by Trump and his legal team, shedding light on the consequences of pursuing baseless lawsuits and the financial burdens incurred in the process.
