The defamation trial initiated by author E. Jean Carroll against Donald Trump, longtime Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn encountered an unexpected interruption from Judge Lewis Kaplan on Tuesday, January 16.
The incident occurred when Epshteyn, a fervent supporter of the MAGA movement, sought to address the court but was promptly questioned by the judge, as reported by Raw Story on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
According to Politico legal reporter Eric Orden, who documented the exchange on social media, Judge Kaplan queried, “Are you a member of the bar of this court?”
In response, Epshteyn asserted, “I’m a member of the New York State Bar.” However, Judge Kaplan, appearing unimpressed, briskly instructed him to take a seat with a firm, “Alright, then please have a seat.”
This interruption underscores the challenges faced by Epshteyn, who has been a subject of criticism both within and outside the Trump circle.
Epshteyn has been accused by former Trump attorneys of aligning with the former president’s less favorable inclinations, contributing to internal power struggles within Trump’s legal teams.
In September, sources close to the departure of Trump lawyer Drew Findling revealed to Rolling Stone that Epshteyn played a role in Findling’s exit.
The report suggests that Epshteyn’s influence mirrors the persistent power struggles within Trump’s legal circles, even during periods when the former president aims to navigate legal challenges.
Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen has also voiced disdain for Epshteyn, dismissing him during a conversation with MSNBC’s Katie Phang last July, stating, “So, good luck because Boris is a moron.”
The trial involving E. Jean Carroll introduces an additional layer of complexity to the legal hurdles faced by individuals associated with Donald Trump.
Carroll accused Trump of defamation, alleging that he falsely claimed to have sexually assaulted her in the 1990s.
The trial has drawn significant attention, not only for the allegations against Trump but also for the broader dynamics within the legal teams involved.
As Epshteyn’s attempt to speak was promptly halted by Judge Kaplan, the repercussions of this incident on the ongoing trial and the dynamics surrounding Trump’s legal representation remain to be seen.
The courtroom drama persists, providing insight into the intricate web of alliances and conflicts within the orbit of the former president.
