Comedian Marlon Wayans recently opened up about his personal life, shedding light on the influence his mother had on his decision not to get married.
In a candid statement to the New York Times, the 51-year-old actor and comedian revealed that he never tied the knot out of fear that his mother would feel jealous. Despite sounding unusual, his reasoning reflects a deep bond with his mother and a desire to prioritize her happiness.
“I never got married because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman. I never wanted my mother to feel second to any woman,” Wayans explained.
Acknowledging his mother’s potential jealousy, Wayans still pursued relationships over the years. Notably, he was in a long-term relationship with Angela Zachary from 1992 to 2013, with whom he shares two children, Shawn and Kai.
Describing his mother as “very needy,” Wayans recounted one of his last conversations with her before her passing in 2020. He expressed to her his heartfelt sentiment: “I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl.”
Since his mother’s passing, Wayans has expressed a newfound openness to the idea of marriage. Reflecting on his career and personal growth, he hinted at the possibility of taking this step in the future, emphasizing the importance of friendship and mutual understanding in relationships.
Wayans also discussed his upcoming comedy special, “Good Grief,” set to premiere on Amazon Prime. The special is expected to delve into the passing of his mother and father, highlighting his ability to navigate real-life pain with humor and vulnerability.
As Wayans continues to explore his personal journey through comedy, his story serves as a reminder of the profound impact family relationships can have on life choices and priorities.
