Excitement fills the air as Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” shares her enthusiasm about her book trilogy being adapted into a series for Amazon. She’s eager to see her vision come to life and hopes her fellow co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, will join her on this new venture.
During “The View’s” “Behind the Table” podcast on May 28, Sunny, aged 55, revealed the latest developments: “We have been greenlit to pilot. So, we are writing the pilot right now, and we will be turning that in to Amazon in about two or three weeks, so it’s well on its way.”
Expressing her casting preferences, Sunny stated, “I would like Octavia Spencer to play the role of Cindy if her time allows. If her time doesn’t allow, if Whoopi Goldberg’s time allows, I would like Whoopi Goldberg to play Cindy.” She also mentioned reaching out to Goldberg but hasn’t heard back yet.
The series is set to follow the storyline of Sunny’s trilogy, with each book spanning a season. Sunny has big dreams for the cast, including stars like Zendaya, John David Washington, and Regé-Jean Page as potential leads.
Sunny’s trilogy, which began with “Summer on the Bluffs” in 2020 and continued with “Summer on Sag Harbor” in 2023, culminates with the release of “Summer on Highland Beach.” These novels are not just beach reads; they offer a blend of fun, historical fiction, and steamy romance. Sunny hopes readers will enjoy learning about history in an engaging manner.
The trilogy serves as a love letter to the African-American communities where Sunny spends her summers, places rich in history and exclusivity. “They are generally African-American communities that no one really knew about,” Sunny explained. “Very private, very exclusive and very historic.”
Beyond her writing endeavors, Sunny launched Sunny Hostin Productions in 2021, aiming to showcase diversity on screen. “I want to make sure that someone watches and knows that seeing an Afro Latina journalist on screen is a possibility,” she stated.
For Sunny, writing has always been a passion. “I’ve journaled since I was young, before it was a thing. I would also make up stories because I loved the process of writing,” she recalled. Collaborating with Whoopi Goldberg every day on “The View” was beyond her imagination, and now, she hopes to see Goldberg bring her character to life on screen.
