Keir Johnston, the man who gained global attention alongside his wife after a viral sensation surrounding the color of a dress they showcased at their wedding, is now facing imprisonment for a disturbing reason. The 38-year-old husband, Keir Johnston, found himself behind bars after a harrowing incident involving his wife, Grace Johnston.
In a terrifying ordeal at their residence on the Isle of Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides, Keir Johnston pinned down his wife, Grace Johnston, and strangled her in March 2022, leaving her in a state of immense fear and distress.
The couple initially garnered worldwide fame back in 2015 when their wedding attire, particularly the dress worn by the bride’s mother, sparked a global debate over its true colors – black and blue or white and gold. Dubbed as ‘The Dress That Broke the Internet’, this garment stirred a massive social media frenzy when a guest, Caitlin McNeill, shared it on Tumblr, seeking assistance in resolving the color dilemma.
The controversy surrounding the dress escalated rapidly, with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift joining the discussion, and the image being shared on Twitter at a staggering rate of up to 11,000 times per minute. The couple even made appearances on popular shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where they were generously awarded $10,000 and a trip to Grenada.
However, beyond the glitz and glamour of their public appearances, a darker reality unfolded behind closed doors. Grace Johnston found herself living in constant fear for her safety, as revealed during the court proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow.
Prosecutor Chris Macintosh detailed the harrowing experiences of Grace Johnston, highlighting the absence of a permanent police presence on the island, which left her feeling trapped and vulnerable.
In a sentencing that reflects the severity of the crime, Judge Lady Drummond sentenced Keir Johnston to four-and-a-half years in prison. Addressing the profound impact of his actions on his wife, Lady Drummond emphasized the emotional, psychological, and financial toll inflicted upon Grace Johnston, noting her enduring suffering and the absence of remorse or empathy from the perpetrator.
In addition to the prison term, a 10-year harassment order was issued, aimed at restricting Keir Johnston’s contact with Grace Johnston, offering a measure of protection and reassurance to the victim.
