Surprising move, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) has become the fifth Democratic member of Congress to urge President Joe Biden to step aside from the upcoming presidential race. This comes in the wake of Biden’s widely criticized performance in the recent presidential debate against Donald Trump.
Craig, in a detailed statement released Saturday, acknowledged Biden’s long-standing service and legislative achievements, including significant laws like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act. However, she emphasized the need for “a new generation of leaders” to confront Trump and the MAGA Republicans.
“While I appreciate President Biden’s dedication and the signing of critical bills into law, such as my own legislation on insulin costs,” Craig stated, “his recent debate performance and the lack of a strong response have raised doubts about his ability to effectively campaign against Donald Trump.”
Craig’s call echoes similar sentiments expressed by fellow Democratic representatives, including Reps. Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.), Mike Quigley (Ill.), and Seth Moulton (Mass.), who have also urged Biden to step aside in favor of new leadership.
“Given the stakes involved in preventing a second Trump presidency, I believe it’s imperative for President Biden to consider stepping aside,” Craig continued. “This decision is not made lightly, but it’s crucial for our party to present a candidate who can effectively unify and inspire our nation.”
In a recent interview with ABC News, Biden dismissed polls showing him trailing Trump, describing the election as “a toss-up” and attributing his debate performance to “just a bad night.”
The growing chorus within the Democratic Party calling for Biden’s withdrawal underscores the uncertainty and urgency surrounding the upcoming election. As discussions intensify, the focus now turns to how the party will navigate these calls and potential shifts in leadership dynamics as the campaign season unfolds.
